You press the gas and the car stumbles, jerks, or pauses before it finally goes. It's one of the most common drivability complaints we see — and while it's annoying, it's also your car telling you something needs attention before it gets worse (or leaves you stranded merging onto the freeway). Here are the usual causes and what to do about them.
Your engine needs a steady, clean supply of fuel. When it doesn't get it, you feel hesitation. Common culprits: dirty or clogged fuel injectors, a weak fuel pump, or a clogged fuel filter. These often show up first as a stumble under acceleration, then get worse over time.
If the spark isn't firing cleanly, the engine misfires and jerks. Worn spark plugs and failing ignition coils are the usual suspects — and they're a common, affordable fix when caught early. A misfire will often also trip your check-engine light.
The engine balances fuel with air, and sensors measure it. A dirty mass airflow (MAF) sensor, a vacuum leak, or a clogged air filter throws that balance off and causes hesitation. These are frequently behind "it only does it sometimes" complaints.
A dirty throttle body can make the car feel unresponsive off the line. And if you drive an automatic, a hesitation that feels like it's coming from the transmission (a delay or slip when it should downshift) points to a different issue — one worth checking promptly.
Hesitation has many possible causes that feel identical from the driver's seat — which is exactly why guessing and replacing parts gets expensive. At 123 Auto Center we scan the live engine data and test to find the real cause, so you fix it once. Our diagnostic rate is $145/hour, with the first hour applied toward your repair when the total exceeds $250.

Is it safe to drive a car that hesitates when accelerating?
For short trips, usually — but it's a safety risk when merging or passing, and it tends to worsen. Get it checked before it strands you.
Could this make me fail a smog check?
Yes. The same misfire or sensor problems that cause hesitation often cause emissions failures. As a BAR-licensed station, we can diagnose both at once.
How much will it cost to fix?
It depends on the cause — a dirty filter or spark plugs is inexpensive; a fuel pump is more. We diagnose first and give you a straight estimate before any work.
