The Challenge: A Failed Smog Check
A 2015 Honda Civic owner from Upland brought their vehicle to us after failing a smog check at a local test-only station. The failure was due to high NOx emissions, and the DMV required repairs before the registration could be renewed. Like many Inland Empire drivers, they were unsure where to turn next — and worried about the cost and hassle.
Diagnostic Process
Our technicians performed a thorough diagnostic that included checking the catalytic converter efficiency, oxygen sensor readings, and EGR valve function. We found a sluggish oxygen sensor and a partially clogged EGR valve — the two issues causing the elevated emissions.
The Repair
We replaced the oxygen sensor and cleaned the EGR valve. The total repair took about 2 hours and cost under $300, including parts and labor — a far cry from the expensive "worst case scenario" the customer had feared.
The Result: Passing the Smog Check
After the repairs, the vehicle passed the smog check with emissions well below the California maximum thresholds. The customer was able to complete their DMV registration renewal the same week — back on the road with minimal downtime and no further headaches.
